DIY vs. BIY… Bow love

diybows

The thing with bows is that it is the kind of item it nevers goes out of fashion. A pretty bow on a headband, purse or brooch can be the perfect accessory. So this week I share a simple and fun craft project .. make your own bows in leather or fabric (the tutorial is based mainly on making bows in leather).

Materials you will need: leather (color you want) I picked up some diferents leathers including one I used for doing this clutch project a  few months ago; clothpins, broochesscissors and glue (UHU).diybow2

The process: 1. cut a piece of leather in the form of a rectangle. 2. Fold the rectangle in the middle forming a bow. At the central zone of the bow apply UHU or other adhesive glue. 3.Turn the bow and apply glue or UHU in the back, inside the folds. 4. Let it dry holding the center of the bow with a clothpin.diybow75. Once everything is dry, remove the clothpin and cut another rectangle of leather to end it neatly. 6. Paste the last piece around the bow and let it dry.diybow4

In case of wanting to use the bow as a brooch, add the brooch on the back sticking it with UHU or other adhesive. If not, as we said before use it to accesorize a purse, a headband or even a belt. Hope you like this project. I am in a bow love mood :)

Happy week everybody, Nina.diybow3

Buena semana, Besos, Caro :)

DIY vs. BIY… shoe laces

shoelacesSince I bought me a pair of new shoelaces from Converse I had the idea of trying to make my own pair. It was really fun, easy and quick project. I really recommend it, because with new shoelaces you can refresh a pair of sneakers in a wink! For this project you would need: fabric (I recommend you to use an elastic one), adhesive tape, scissors, pins, needle and thread or in my case I used a sew machine.shoelaces11. 2. The first step is to cut the fabric in a very long rectangle shape. 3. Make a cut in the middle of the first piece of fabric, making two simetric rectangles. 4.5. Once the fabric is cut, you are going to have two identical pieces, so with the help of the pins fold it together and put some pins to help you in the sewing process. 6. Try to sew the two sides of the fabric as straight as you can, with a sewing machine it´s a very quick process. 7.To finish you can use transparent adhesive tape as a neat termination. You can roll the endings of the fabrics and add the adhesive tape. 8. Cut the remaining of the fabric. Finally choose a pair of sneakers to try your new shoe laces and voilá!shoelaces4Congratulations you have new shoe laces!!! I have the lucky to find a very similar fabric for this project but you can make them with the fabric pattern you like or even in a plain color!shoelaces5shoelaces3

Polka dots pants with polka dots shoe laces! What do you think??

DIY vs. BIY… a hippie cooking apron

diyvsbiyapron8

I have to admit that I am not a very “cooking person” I never have the natural talent and I didn´t practice it a lot either. For me is a an unresolved matter I hope some day I will take the leap into it. But for this DIY vs. BIY project is not necessary to know how to cook, the only request is to have some crafting time and have fun in the process. This week we are making a beautiful hippie cooking apron. The materials you will need for this project are: bleach, jean, string, ribbon, textile paints, brush, sewing kit, scissors, paper.

diyvsbiyapron

1.2. The first step is to cut the fabric with three molds: one for the main part of the apron and the others for the above and low part. 3.4. Once cut, you will need the string to isolate some zones of the fabric that you want to maintain the original color of the jean.  5. Immerse the part of the fabric you want to be discolor into the boil with water and bleach. 6. After these process remember to cut the strings and wash the fabric with lots of water. diyvsbiyapron9This is a important step, so take your time and once the fabric is dry you can move to the final stage.diyvs.biyapron37. Put together all the three pieces. 8. Sew all of the parts, I did it with a sewing machine, but you can do it by hand, just calculate extra time. 9. To give some color to the jean I add some fluo string in the edges of the apron, I sew it by hand by making a zigzag 10. Add some ribbon so you can tie your apron in the back.diyvsbiyapron4I wanted to decorate the apron with some “famous cooking words”, I used “Bon appetite” and I add some milkshake shapes. For this I recommend you textile paints. In my case I used some pastel tones.diyvsbiyapron7I also add some ribbon and pom-poms (of course my horse!!) to add more details, but depends on you.diyvsbiyapron5Hope you like this project and I have to say thanks to my little sister who help a lot in this project!!

Happy cooking time!!

Love,

Nina:)

DIY vs. BIY… Photo Display

photodisplayFor the “DIY vs. BIY” project of this week, I choose to make a photo display. I love to print photos (I always have tons!) but the thing is that nowadays it´s no so common to print them. We are very used to just look the pictures in the computer or even share them in the different platforms that today became so popular: Instagram, Pinterest, Flickr and lots of other ones. So here is a very easy solution and a good excuse to print your photos and share them in your home.photodisplay1For this project you will need: metallic wire, pliers, acrylics paints, a brush, clothespins and mushroom head suction pads.  photodisplay31. First, cut the mettalic wire in the length you choose (depending on where you are thinking to put the display) 2. Pass the wire through the suction pad. 3.4.5 Secure the end by putting something in the end of the wire. For this you can use the plier. 6. Choose some bright colors and paint the clothespins.photodisplay2 photodisplay4For painting the clothespins, I use some acrylics I have in my home, it´s no necesary to buy special paint for this project. The important thing is to add some beautiful colors to the display, so depending on your taste you can choose one single color (for a more serious display) or mix them like I did. The last ingredient: the photos!!! Hang them with the clothespins and that´s it! You have a beautiful photo display you can be proud of! Enjoy it!!

DIY vs. BIY… Print Totes

printtote2

I love totes, I use them daily to carry things and for me are very practical. Depending on the color and the material, you can use them to go to the beach, carry notebooks, for work and even to go to shopping. When I decided to make one of my own, I thought that it should have a simple design but it was a must to be stamp. I decided that my main theme would be Paris (is my favorite city in the world) and it was an easy decision because I already have some Paris rubber stamps. If you don´t have rubber stamps, you can do this project by making your own rubber stamps with foamy.

printtote

You can make the tote from scratch, you would need to buy some fabric (for stamping the perfect option is cream-coloured), and sew the two rectangles plus two straps. Or if you don´t want to sew, you just need to find a empty tote to design, depends on you! For the stamping process I used black fabric paint and a Eiffel Tower rubber stamp.

In the end I added some colorful ribbons and some pom-poms and Voilá!printtote0

Hope you like it and please try yours!! Love, Nina.

DIY vs. BIY… Cuddly toys

DOITVS.BUYIT

I am really enjoying the art of doing crafts. Inspired in some beautiful plush creatures, I decided to do some stuffed animals and my election were rabbits and owls. The process start by choosing the fabrics and drawing the molde. My own mold was inspired in a drawing I had..rabbit.theninaproject

For this project you would need fabrics (different patterns better), scissors, thread, pins, wadding and needles. rabbit.theninaproject5

You can sew it by hand or if you have a sewing machine you can save some time.rabbit.theninaproject4 rabbits.theninaproject1

1. Cut the mold into the fabric. 2. With black wool draw the eyes of the rabbit or whatever creature you are creating(I imagine them sleepy). 3. Sew it, by hand or by machine. 4. Put something inside the creature with the help of a stick, I used wadding but you can use other fabrics or cotton. 5. Cut the excess of fabric. 6. Put everything together with the help of pins, in my case I choose to use a little bow just to keep it more cute. 7. Have fun with it!!rabbits.theninaprojectHope you like it!!! Love, Nina 😉

DIY vs. BIY Leather Clutches

Weeks ago me and my sister decided to play with some leather I bought time ago. We choose to make some leather clutches and we started trying to dye the leather. The process was easy because we have all the materials in home.

clutch

clutch6

For dyeing leather you will need spray paint of any color or there are special fabric paints which are better for the final results, masking tape and remember to put something (nylon, paper, cardboard) to mantain the surface down below clean.

clutches1Once you have the leather dry, you have to make a paper mold (our mold was 54 cm length x 28 cm width) and cut the lather in the same shape of the mold.

clutch3Then we put the clutch together with the help of some clothespins and make some tiny holes to help the thread go through the leather.

We really enjoy all the process and it is perfect to try it for making a present or even use it yourself. Good luck!! and I hope you like it. clutch7

DIY vs. BIY “Do it versus Buy it”

Today I am introducing a new feature call “DO IT VS. BUY IT “. This new thing is a combination of two of my big loves: shopping and crafting.

For me this feature is a way of trying to do things that maybe in an other way I would not do it. Just to push myself harder and try things to decor my house, to use it myself or even to make a homemade gift, why not? The important thing here is that there is no going to be a winner, you can buy it or do it, that would be your choice.

For this first post I choose a lovely project, that I did for my brother´s new house: a pom pom tree. The ocassion: Christmas.doitvsbuyit

For this project you would need: yarn of any color (my choice was purple), sharp scissors, a plant pot, a wooden stick, some fabric to cover the pot and a pom pom maker or if you don´t have one you can do a pom pom with card board or even using your fingers.

The first step is to make the giant pom pom, I used the Clover extra large pom pom maker. I really recommend it!

doitvsbuyit2doitvsbuyit1

The second part of the project was painting the plant pot and the stick, for the pot I chosen purple and white and for the stick I used some neon colors to add a little fun!

doitvs.buyit4

The last part is to put everything together and ta-ra! A new pom-pom tree is born 😉doitvs.buyit6

Hope you enjoy it! And I wish you can try it! The most important thing: have fun in the process, if not remember you can always BUY IT!

Nina :)
