Over the past years the motto “Do it yourself” have gain more and more space in the online community. Lots of blogs have develop features under this topic, showing how you can do yourself things you used to buy. The core of this new trend was allowing people to make their own version of things. And it apply not only to fashion, home decor, food, beauty and a big etcetera.  But what it really hit me last week was how brands are taking advantage of this trend?, and the biggest example that came to my mind was the “new” brand Kate Spade lunch recently: SATURDAY.

Under the Kate Spade umbrella, this brand is the perfect execution of the nowadays DIY TREND, allowing costumers in a unique way to make their own versions of their pieces. The windowpane collection offers from cups, iphone cases to dresses and they even sell you the drypens to paint the items. Or the other customizable item is the weekender bag, where you can choose the patterns, colors and combinations you want to use.

Other brand that walk in the DIY direction is CONVERSE allowing customers to personalize their sneakers and I have to admit it´s a fun process of designing your own Converse.

It´s good to see brands allowing the customers to play with their products and make them unique and personal. I think it´s fun! So does your favorite brand embracing the DIY madness? Can you imagine Channel or the big fashion brands doing this? In my personal opinion I would love to see this trend more and more.

Spanish: Desde hace unos años el lema “DO IT YOURSELF” o “HACELO TÚ MISMO” a ganado más y más espacio en la comunidad online. Muchos blogs han desarrollado proyectos y categorías bajo este tema, enseñando y mostrando como hacer cosas tu mismo que antes las comprabas. Dejando a la gente hacer sus propias versiones de cosas se fue expandiendo no solo en la moda, sino en áreas como la decoración de interiores, comida, belleza y un gran etcetera. Pero lo que realmente me llamo la atención sobre esta moda es como las grandes marcas están tomando ventaja de esto. Y la primera que se me vino a la mente fue la nueva marca que lanzó Kate Spade hace unas semanas “Saturday“. Bajo el paraguas Kate Spade, esta marca lanzó varios productos customizables para los consumidores. La colección “windowpane” ofrece desde tazas, billeteras hasta vestidos para customizar y hasta te venden los drypens para hacerlo! O también customizar a medida una “cartera de fin de semana” que ellos llaman “The Weekender Bag”. Otra marca que le ha abierto la puerta al “Hacelo tu mismo” es CONVERSE, que ofrece el servicio de personalizar sus modelos. Es bueno ver a las marcas dejando a los consumidores jugar con sus productos y volverlos más unicos y en mi opinión personal me parece divertido. Te pusiste a pensar si tu marca favorita ya ha probado la locura del “hacelo vos mismo”? ¿Te imaginas Channel o las grandes marcas de la moda dejando hacer esto? Mi opinion personal es que me gustaría verlo cada vez más, el DIY marketing está acá para quedarse.

Making a vintage photo display

photodisplaynew10Remember this project? Well I am still a little bit obsess about displaying photos in my home. The thing is I have tons of photos (i take pictures everyday) but all of them finish in the computer or in Instagram (which is more productive than in my desktop). So here is another idea of how you can display photos in your home. Is a super easy and low budget project you can do it in an hour. For this project you will need: vintage hangers with two you are ok, clothespins (I think maybe I am developing an obsession about painting clothespins ja!), spray paint in: white, gold and silver.photodisplaynew2First paint the hangers in white, but don´t stress yourself about covering every area of the hunger, we are trying to make them look a little vintage.photodislpay2Then repeat the process but now with the clothespins I recommend you depending on the size of the pictures you want to hung to use at least four clothespins for each hanger.photodislpaynew4I paint four in gold and four with silver paint. Once you are done, let it dry and put the pictures you choose to display!! This is a very good idea not only for your home, but to do party displays with photos depending on the occasion babyshowers, birthday or even anniversaries. Hope you like it!!!photodisplaynew7photodsiplaynew8Spanish: Se acuerdan de este proyecto? Bueno todavía sigo estando un poco obsesionada con colgar o mostrar fotos en mi casa. El punto es que tengo miles de fotos (tengo que admitir que saco fotos todos los días) y aunque algunas terminan en Instagram la gran mayoría mueren en una carpeta en mi computadora. Así que comparto con ustedes una nueva idea para darles un lugar en la casa a esas fotos lindas que tienen. Además es un proyecto súper rápido de hacer y con cosas que ya tenes en tu casa. Materiales que vas a necesitar: 2 perchas de madera tipo vintage (las de las tintorerías de antes son perfectas), palillos (por lo menos cuatro por percha, aunque depende del tamaño de la fotos que quieras desplegar), pintura en spray en los colores: blanco, plateado y dorado. photodisplaynew4Lo primero es pintar las perchas con la pintura en spray blanca, no es necesario cubrir toda la percha a la perfección, la idea es darle un look medio vintage así que es bueno que queden partes donde se vea la madera. Luego repetir el mismo proceso pero ahora con los palillos. En mi caso pinte cuatro con spray dorado y cuatro con spray plateado. Dejen secar bien y después elijan sus fotos y voilá! Un nuevo accesorio para el hogar en una hora! Este proyecto también se puede utilizar para desplegar fotos en eventos como babyshowers, cumpleaños o aniversarios. Muy simple y lindo! People I admire… Shannon Rankin

Shannon Rankin is an amazing artist that put together drawings and collages using vintage maps. She is a full time artist that exhibits and also sell prints in her Etsy shop. Here is her statement about what she does:

“…I create installations, collages and sculptures that use the language of maps to explore the connections among geological and biological processes, patterns in nature, geometry and anatomy. Using a variety of distinct styles I intricately cut, score, wrinkle, layer, fold, paint and pin maps to produce revised versions that often become more like the terrains they represent. I really want to share with you an amazing video I found in you tube, that really reflects clearly the process of making your dreams come true. This videos are originally produce from an Consultant Company named INKNOWATION. But besides the bussiness message, I think this is a perfect message for everyone. It´s a very “visual way” to understand the process and start. Someone told me once that INTENTION is the most important force to achive changes in your life, and if you are prepare the universe will help you to make them real. Realmente quería compartir con ustedes unos íncreibles videos que encontre en you tube, que explican claramente el proceso necesario para poder llevar tus sueños a la realidad, para construir la vida que cada uno quiere. Estos videos originalmente fueron producidos por una compañia consultora de empresas que se llama INKNOWATION, pero más allá de que el mensaje sea para desarrollar cambios en ámbitos empresariales, es un mensaje perfecto para todas las personas, porque es algo común a todos. El proceso se presenta en una forma muy visual para entender ciertos conceptos y empezar a hacer, empezar a crear lo que uno quiere vivir. Puede sonar muy new age, pero te aseguro que vale la pena verlo. Alguien me dijo una vez, que la INTENCIÓN es una de las fuerzas más importantes para conseguir cambios en la vida y si estas preparado el universo va a conspirar para que alcances tu sueño. People I admire… Anna Kövecses

I found the work of Anna Kövecses in a blog a while ago. She is a very talented graphic designer from Hungary but now living in Cyprus. Her work has an amazing style. Simple lines, primary colors and a very good taste are her signature. I really enjoy every single piece of her work, because even if she is doing a magazine or web ad, she can be so artistic that the ad will look just a piece of art (take a look to her American Airlines work).ANNAKOVECSES6

Ella es una diseñadora gráfica hungara que actualmente reside en Chipre (que divinoo!). Su obra tiene un estilo muy marcado: líneas simples, colores primarios y un muy buen gusto son su firma. Realmente disfruto mucho explorar cada una de sus creaciones porque puede estar haciendo una página de publicidad y a la vez lograr que el aviso sea super artístico (si pueden chequen el trabajo que hizo para American Airlines). La verdad me encanta el trabajo de Anna y quería compartirlo con ustedes, que tengan un fin de semana cargado de energía, sol y diversión! :)

A few weeks ago I started to contribute to The Fashion Swap Party Blog, a lovely uruguayan fashion blog. I am writing a weekly post called “The Nina Picks” about some of my favorite Picks and cravings about fashion. Spanish: Desde hace unas semanas comencé a contribuir con el blog “Fashion Swap Party” un blog uruguayo de moda. Estoy escribiendo un post semanal que se llama “Los picks de Nina” donde semanalmente elijo un objeto de moda para compartir. Mediante una ilustración y unas pocas palabras argumento cuales serían las principales tres razones para agregarlo a tu guardarropas. Realmente me encanta la experiencia y quiero agradecer al equipo de F.S.P por invitarme a colaborar con ellas. Espero les guste!!

On making your own art or “something close to art”

HANGUINGART4 I´ve been thinking how to decorate and make more “our own” our apartment. We have been living in this place for over and year and a half and I have to admit I´ve been a little lazy about the hanging art chapter. So last week I was in a decoration mode and try to fill my walls with things I like. For me was really important to exercise my creativity trying to do my own art or as I call it “something close to art”. This is a way of making your home more personalize and yours. And is good for the pocket too! hungingart3To add some “personality” to my home I try some writing in a white canvas, something super easy to do. You can choose a song lyric, a poem or just a random text. I add some aerosol painting to make it more cool. Here is the same project in which I inspire me to do this.hanguingart6hangingart2To add some color I play with collage, paints, markers, the result of mixing different styles and materials is amazing.candylamp8You can mix your home made art with buying some pieces of art you really enjoy to have. The good thing is that you can always change, re-paint or add some new canvas depending or your mood, depending on the season. It´s a great way to stay fresh!

Desde hace un tiempo he estado pensado como re-decorar o darle un refresh a mi hogar de una manera económica. La primera idea que se me vino a la cabeza fue crear mi propio arte o como lo llamo yo “algo cercano al arte”. Lo lindo de esto es que es un ejercicio para la creatividad y la imaginación. Darle personalidad al hogar es llenarlo de detalles de uno mismo y ese fue el objetivo. Usando diferentes técnicas, collage, pintura, marcadores conseguí ponerle color a algunas paredes que lo necesitaban. Lo bueno de hacer cosas para colgar en tu propia casa es que si te aburris o queres cambiarlas podes hacerlo facilmente re pintando los lienzos o agregando otros. Es una gran manera para mantener el hogar fresco y actualizado según la etapa por la que estes pasando!

I am over the moon with this project, because we (the lovely Marisa and me) have been working a lot the past few months with inspiration and options for this place. And we hope you like it!! Tomorrow is the day, so don´t worry if you have some problems seeing some posts, because we will be working hard to deliver you the new site on Monday. It has been such a great experience blogging here this past months and I hope to keep sharing with you my ideas, projects and thoughts. Estoy super contenta de poder compartir una gran noticia! Este fin de semana estaremos lanzando un nuevo diseño para este blog!(carita de felicidad la mía). Estaremos (haramos dijo un mosquito) en realidad la encargada de poner todas las líneas de código en su lugar es Marisa (la diseñadora) y yo estaré haciendo lo que se llama “el aguante” jeje. Hablando en serio hemos estado trabajando mucho los últimos meses, con inspiración, ideas, idas y venidas (pobre Marisa!) y espero que el resultado final les guste. El diseño podríamos decir es muy Caro aunque debo admitir me tranquilice con los colores así que no saquen sus lentes de sol todavía para leerlo ja! Mañana Domingo es el día, así que no se preocupen si no pueden acceder a alguno de los posts, o ven algo “fuera de lugar” porque el Lunes ya quedara todo pronto. Aprovecho para agradecer a cada uno de ustedes por parar en este micro rincón de la world wide web. Personalmente me encanta escribir y compartir con ustedes mis ideas, proyectos e inspiración y espero que lo estén disfrutando tanto como yo. Gracias!!
